Which South Jordan Records Are Open?
Utah classifies government material as public, private, controlled, protected, or limited. Public status does not always create a free name index. A custodian may instead offer an address search, an in-person terminal, inspection by appointment, or copies upon request. South Jordan City keeps the files its departments create. Salt Lake County holds the main land, assessment, marriage, election, and archive trails, while the Utah judiciary controls court files.
| Record set | Custodian | Online route | Public access |
|---|---|---|---|
| City and police files | South Jordan Recorder or department | GRAMA form | Public portions by request; police reports cost $15 |
| Deeds, liens, and plats | Salt Lake County Recorder | Free Public Search plus paid Data Services | Index and eligible instruments; copies cost extra |
| Property roll and GIS | Salt Lake County Assessor | Owner, address, parcel, and map searches | Free current-roll access |
| Civil, criminal, and probate cases | Utah courts | Xchange | Paid web or free public terminals; exclusions apply |
| Birth, death, marriage, and divorce | State, county, court, or archives by era | Historical indexes and certificate ordering | Recent copies require eligibility and ID |
| Custody and professional licenses | County sheriff, UDC, or DOPL | State and county lookups | Selected current public fields |
Restricted categories include sealed or expunged cases, juvenile matters, adoption files, civil commitments, recent vital certificates, and protected current addresses. Court rules also make parts of some domestic, custody, stalking, and guardianship actions private. An index can confirm that a record exists without opening the full file or supplying a certified copy.
South Jordan Records Under GRAMA
The Utah Government Records Access and Management Act, Utah Code Title 63G, Chapter 2, governs requests to executive and local agencies. Any person may ask for a public record described with reasonable specificity. South Jordan states an ordinary response window of ten business days. The window is five business days when the requester demonstrates that release benefits the public rather than the requester alone.
An agency may provide the record, deny it with the classification and appeal path, or explain extraordinary circumstances. Utah Code §63G-2-203 permits reasonable actual costs and certain staff charges, though the first quarter-hour of staff time is generally not charged. South Jordan posts a paper-copy rate of 25 cents per page. Inspection may avoid copy fees, while a request for newly compiled data may create added service costs.
Note: Judicial records follow court access rules and clerk procedures, not GRAMA as a substitute for Xchange or the court file.
Search South Jordan Recorder Records
The Salt Lake County Recorder Public Search is a limited free entry point. It begins with terms, then asks for either an address or parcel. The value must be chosen from autocomplete. County data may lag by at least 24 hours. The interface does not state its earliest historical coverage date, so no start year should be assumed.
Name-based title work belongs to the richer Data Services product. It advertises searches for owners, parcel history, legal descriptions, recorded documents, tract indexes, chains of title, and subdivision plats. Access starts at $5 for 24 hours and up to 150 data units. Someone who needs a specific copy can bypass that product and give Recorder staff the book and page, or index book, page, and line, along with party, recording date, and document type.
| Recorder route | Best key | Cost or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free Public Search | Autocomplete address or parcel | Limited property-oriented entry |
| Data Services | Owner, document, tract, title chain, or plat | $5 per 24 hours and 150 units; larger packages offered |
| Document request | Book/page or index location plus party and date | $2 per page; historical copy $5 per page |
| Certified copy | Recorded-document identifiers | $5 certification plus $2 per page |
For a South Jordan parcel, capture the full 14-digit parcel number before moving between county systems. That stable key helps separate similar owner names, street spellings, and land with a changed address.
South Jordan Assessor Ownership Records
The Salt Lake County Assessor Property Search accepts an owner name, a street broken into number and directional parts, or a parcel number. Owner searches need at least three letters and use the format Last, First. Parcel mode uses the first ten digits, with an optional four-digit encumbrance. Results can show owner, the 14-digit parcel, situs address, tax-mailing address, legal description context, assessed values, and current-roll property attributes.
| Search field | Input type | Format note |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | Text | At least three letters; Last, First |
| Frontage Number | Text | Street number |
| Prefix Direction | Selector | Direction before the street |
| Street Name/Number | Text | Main street component |
| Street Type | Selector | Road suffix or type |
| Suffix Direction | Selector | Direction after the street |
| Parcel Number | Text | First ten digits; final four optional |
Situs means the physical property location. The mailing address is where the tax notice goes. A different mailing address can point to a trustee, manager, or non-occupying owner, but it does not prove anyone’s current home. The assessor card identifies ownership, not every resident. The free Parcel Viewer can confirm the mapped parcel boundary, while deeds from the Recorder establish transfer dates and grantor or grantee roles.
Ownership is not occupancy. Treat the assessment roll as evidence about the parcel owner, then use other lawful sources for any occupant question.
South Jordan Public Records Offices
South Jordan is not the Salt Lake County seat. Municipal requests stay at City Hall, but recorded land and archive work may lead to Salt Lake City. General-jurisdiction court files for the area are associated with Third District Court in West Jordan. Confirm hours before a trip, especially for archives work, which is by appointment.

Appointments required
City Hall hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to noon. The Recorder’s county office lists Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. South Jordan City records include official municipal files, archives-room material, elections records, council agendas, minutes, and recordings.
South Jordan Court Records Through Xchange
South Jordan Justice Court handles city ordinances, traffic matters, infractions, class B and C misdemeanors, and small claims. Third District Court handles civil, domestic, probate, felony, and class A misdemeanor cases. Utah Xchange searches eligible district and justice cases statewide. West Jordan’s CORIS coverage begins in June 2005 and includes converted Sandy, Murray, and West Valley data.
Xchange can search by jurisdiction, case number, party surname and first name, case type, statewide or local scope, birth date when populated, citation, and filing or disposition date. Results may show court, case type, case number, filing date, party role, events, lawyers, charges, disposition, and an address if one was filed. A blank address does not mean the party had none. The first two case-number digits indicate filing year, and the portal returns no more than 500 matches.
Online use is paid, with guest access starting from a $10 credit. Public electronic documents cost $1 each when available. Free Xchange access is offered at most district courthouses and the Utah State Law Library. The court of filing still holds the full record, and judicial files more than 50 years old may have moved to Utah State Archives.
Note: Call a justice court before relying on terminal access because the official research only confirms free terminals at most district courts.
South Jordan Vital Records Boundaries
Utah Code §26B-8-125 opens birth records after 100 years, death records after 50 years, and other vital records after 75 years. Newer certificates are limited to the subject, qualifying relatives, a guardian, or a designated legal representative who supplies acceptable ID and proof. Salt Lake County Health Department and the Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics serve current birth and death requests.
The state provides marriage and divorce certificates for 1978 through 2010. For other years, use the county clerk for marriage or the court for divorce. Historical paths include Salt Lake County Archives marriage copies from 1887 through 1939 and its marriage index from 1887 through 1904. Utah State Archives offers older birth and death indexes as statutory release periods expire.
Fees effective July 1, 2026 are $25 for a birth, marriage, or divorce certificate and $35 for a death certificate. Older downloadable applications still display $18, so the dated fee schedule controls. Mail requests need a signed application, payment, and copies of acceptable identification. Published state timing differs; allow the longer six-week expectation and verify it when ordering.
Search South Jordan Custody Records
State public records can answer narrow status questions that no city index covers. The Utah Department of Corrections search includes people currently incarcerated or supervised on probation or parole by UDC. It does not cover an unsentenced person held only in the county jail. Search by offender number, or by first and last name with an optional middle name.
The official Utah offender search shows the two supported search modes.
That screen helps a South Jordan searcher choose the correct scope before treating a county custody result and a state supervision result as the same thing.
Verify South Jordan License Records
The Utah Division of Professional Licensing offers a separate verification tool. It accepts a name plus profession, with beginning or containing matching, or a license number. Results identify the profession, license identity, and status. A public license entry supports a credential check, but its address should not be read as proof of a person’s present residence.
The official Utah DOPL Licensee Lookup displays those name, profession, and number choices.
The profession filter can separate similar South Jordan names while keeping the result tied to an official licensing custodian.
Records Kept Off South Jordan Screens
Open government has firm privacy lines. Xchange omits sealed, expunged, adoption, civil-commitment, juvenile delinquency, child-welfare, and parental-rights termination cases. Some hearing minutes, judgments, orders, decrees, and letters of appointment may remain open even when substantive details in a family or guardianship matter are private. Ask the filing court about a specific document instead of assuming the whole case is open or closed.
Utah also withholds full voter birth dates, government identification numbers, Social Security numbers, signatures, and other protected fields. At-Risk voter classification and the Safe at Home program guard current location information for eligible people. DMV personal data is constrained by federal and state law. A once-public deed or older address is not automatically erased when a newer protected address takes effect.
Use records lawfully. Never use an official lookup to stalk, harass, threaten, or expose a protected location. Verify important facts with the custodian.
South Jordan Records Beyond City Hall
Salt Lake County Archives describes county holdings from 1852 to the present. South Jordan incorporated in 1935, long after territorial land, tax, and court systems began. Early residents may therefore appear under county geography without a municipal South Jordan label. This matters for family history, estate research, and proof of an older residence.
Archive sources include tax ledgers from 1853 through 2021, land-title certificates from 1851 through 1895, mortgages from 1888 through 1951, and tax appraisal cards from 1934 through 1987. Some runs are digitized, but not all. Appraisal cards can hold an owner, address, building details, sketch, value, and photograph. They are searched by address or parcel rather than by personal name.
South Jordan’s westward growth and 2023 annexation create another geography issue. A modern address, especially around newer western development, may have older county or unincorporated descriptions. Follow the parcel and legal description across time, then compare county tax ledgers and Polk directories if ownership and occupancy need to be separated.
Define South Jordan Record Terms
A few precise terms prevent costly requests and mistaken conclusions. They also help a custodian identify the exact item sought.
- Custodian
- The agency or office responsible for keeping and responding for a record.
- Index
- A finding aid that lists a record and key details. It may not include the underlying image.
- Certified copy
- A copy formally authenticated by the keeper. Certification has its own fee.
- Grantor and grantee
- The party giving an interest in land and the party receiving it.
- Exemption
- A legal basis for withholding all or part of material that would otherwise answer a request.
An index hit is a starting point. Use its case, parcel, book, page, or document number to obtain the source record, especially when names are common or a fact must be confirmed.
Request South Jordan Public Records
The South Jordan GRAMA form asks for the requester’s name, address, daytime phone, email, date, and a specific record description. It can accept identity or authorization material when the request concerns police, fire, medical, or other restricted content. Delivery choices include inspection, a paid copy, or a copy with a fee-waiver request.
- Identify the office that created or keeps the record. Send land documents to the county Recorder, court files to the clerk, and city-created material to South Jordan.
- Check the custodian’s index first. Save the parcel, case, license, book/page, document number, exact name, and date range that narrow the request.
- Ask for an existing record, not a new investigation or analysis. State whether inspection will suffice and include a fee cap when cost is uncertain.
- Submit the official form or follow the office’s mail, counter, or portal route. Keep the confirmation and any quoted completion date.
- Read a denial for its classification, cited exemption, and appeal notice. A GRAMA administrative appeal normally starts with the chief administrative officer, with further State Records Committee or court review available under the statute.
A focused request is often faster. Police or accident reports carry the posted $15 fee, while ordinary city paper copies cost 25 cents per page. Ask for a written estimate when staff research, unusual formatting, or a large volume may raise the total.
